As our seasons change and academic terms start (and end in some places), we continue to hold out the promise of (or hope for?) increased access to high-quality learning opportunities for all who need and want them. Members of the HyFlex Learning Community are engaged globally at all levels of the education system, both formally and informally. We are doing what we can to provide equitable and flexible learning whenever possible and practical. This is work worth doing!
This month, we highlight several events and opportunities for you to engage with other community members in exploring and learning from our experiences using GenAI to build, facilitate, and evaluate learning in HyFlex courses and programs, and find ways to use the same tools and processes for other course modes, too. When we design for HyFlex, we are, in effect, designing for engaged learning in face-to-face traditional classes, synchronous online classes, and asynchronous online classes. Have you considered this remarkable truth? Amazing.
This newsletter:
- Highlights two upcoming events: 1) our next "HLC Gathering" (webinar) on September 25, 2025, and 2) a new workshop offered by the HyFlex Learning Community focused GenAI for design and learning in any course mode (not just HyFlex).
- Summarizes several recent HyFlex-related happenings "in the news", and
- Highlights two recent HLC blog posts.
Upcoming Events:
1. HLC Gathering (webinar)
Next Community Gathering – September 25, 2025: We will hold our next webinar on September 25, and continue our 2025 Gathering Series, GenAI to Support HyFlex Course and Program Design. Our third session will explore and demonstrate the next custom GPT for HyFlex Design, HyFlex Planning for Assessment (freely available in the OpenAI GPT Store). The GPT takes your planning to the next major stage as you consider assessing learning in multiple ways as a way to support and evaluate learning in all modes. How can we evaluate learning fairly and with equivalent environments? How can we help learners self-evaluate their learning in each mode? We will share access to this GPT during the webinar so those participants with an OpenAI account for ChatGPT (free or paid) can experiment with the GPT as we discuss and then continue afterward. Please join us on September 25!

After September 25, you can review this webinar with all the other Gatherings on the Gathering Archives page.
2. Designing on the Edge: Teaching Smarter with AI
New in Fall 2025! Join us for a one-week, flexible, hands-on workshop for faculty and instructional designers focused on the use of AI in course design, development, and teaching in any course mode – not just HyFlex.
Designing on the Edge: Teaching Smarter with AI - October 13-17 (with three optional synchronous sessions) Whether you’re teaching a course or supporting someone who is, AI tools are rapidly changing how we design, deliver, and improve learning experiences. This hands-on, one-week workshop is designed for both faculty and instructional designers who want to explore how generative AI and other AI-powered tools can enhance content creation, student engagement, and all forms of assessment. You can find this workshop in the HyFlex Learning Store at https://hyflexlearning.info. Questions? Please see the HyFlex Workshops page or Contact us for more information. And yes, we can arrange for custom dates and times for groups of five or more.
HyFlex in the News:
1. HyFlex Continues to Move Through the Gartner Hype Cycle - Echo360 recognized for their support for HyFlex teaching and learning
https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/echo360-recognized-in-gartner-hype-cycle-for-higher-education-2025-302546137.html
Though we do not generally endorse any specific products for HyFlex teaching and learning, we do call attention to those we use in the stories we share and when we come across "news" articles about successes. Echo360 recently released this marketing/PR article mentioning their inclusion in the Gartner Hype Cycle for Higher Education 2025 report associated with HyFlex Classrooms. In 2024, I wrote a blog post charting the path of HyFlex Classrooms through this hype cycle (read that here: https://www.hyflexlearning.org/2024/05/10/hyflex-hype-cycle/). The journey continues.

Drs. Julie Lindsay and Lisa Jacka have created a wonderful resource site that explains the University of Queensland's FlexEd approach to hybrid and flexible learning and teaching. The resources include the [free, CC licensed] ebook, HyFlex: Creating accessible teaching and learning in a digital age. Direct book link: https://usq.pressbooks.pub/hyflex/. Check it out!
