Hello, HyFlex Learning Community members!

We are well into the Fall 21 term and actively planning for Winter and Spring terms. It is likely that all of our institutions are back on-campus for much if not all of our programs, thought it seems not all of our students are ready to be back on-campus yet. Have you found that to be true in your case?

We continue to have at least one-third of our students telling us (when they are asked and they choose to respond) that they either aren't ready to come back to classes in person or they just prefer learning online and want to stay there - for the long term. What does this mean for us? I think it means we have to be ready to support more online learners in more programs for the foreseeable future. Even if we aren't ready to officially deploy HyFlex courses (or multimodal courses without flexibilty in some places), we are being challenged to at least unofficially support both classroom and online students in many courses.

I hope we quickly get to the point of recognizing that this need being expressed by students for participation options and flexibility is NOT GOING AWAY. So let's prepare more fully to teach differently for the long term, in order to support effective learning for all of our students, not just those in our "preferred" modes.

This month in our online gathering, we'll be continuing our discussion of engaging learners in all modes, focusing on a mix of asynchronous and synchronous engagement strategies and tools.

Gathering Online October 27, 2021

We are hosting our next HyFlex Learning Community gathering (online) on October 27, 2021 from 10:00am-11:00am PT. (This is a "day of week" change from our previous Friday gathering events.)

Our discussion will focus on designing and teaching an “asynchronous first” flipped course that can become the backbone of your HyFlex course. We will spend time sharing ideas and practices for engaging your asynchronous students as well as bringing them together in discussion with the synchronous students as much as possible. We’ll share some of our design and teaching practices and tools we use, describing how and why we use them, and discussing how well they work within our own teaching practices.  We will also talk about the challenges that come with this approach. We encourage all of you to bring your own methods to share and questions for us to discuss.

We are using the GoToMeeting web conferencing system and have capacity for approximately 250 participants. To reserve a seat, please use this Eventbrite link to register for the webinar and receive the event link through email. https://bit.ly/3uGU4Qt  The gathering event is open to all who register - members and future members alike :)

HyFlex Course Design Workshops October 11-15, 2021 and January 10-14, 2022

Looking ahead, our next HyFlex Course Design workshops are scheduled for October 11-15, 2021 and January 10-14, 2022. This fully online workshop is hosted in our own LMS site, is facilitated by several members of the HLC team, and consists of five 90-minute synchronous sessions throughout the week, supported by online resources and asynchronous discussion activities each day. Fully asynchronous participation is also supported. For full description and the opportunity to  enroll, visit https://www.hyflexlearning.org/workshops/ .
