For many of us, another academic term has ended, with some heading into summer vacation season, and others beginning the next winter season. In any case, the times continue to be interesting and the work we do keeps changing as AI evolves and we change with it. This month, we highlight several events and opportunities you have to engage with us in exploring and learning from our experiences using GenAI to build, facilitate, and evaluate learning in HyFlex courses and programs, and find ways to use the same tools and processes for other course modes, too.
This newsletter:
- announces events: our next "HLC Gathering" (webinar) on June 18, 2025, a new workshop offered by the HyFlex Learning Community focused GenAI for design and learning in any course mode (not just HyFlex), and reminds us of the upcoming HyFLex Collaborative Conference on June 26,
- summarizes a recent HyFlex-related happening "in the news", and
- highlights recent HLC blog posts.
Upcoming Events:
1. HLC Gathering (webinar)
Next Community Gathering – June 18, 2025: Our next webinar will continue the series, GenAI to Support HyFlex Course and Program Design. The second session introduces and explores our custom GPT for content planning in a HyFlex course or program, HyFlex Content Planning (freely available in the OpenAI GPT Store). This GPT takes your planning beyond simple content provision to areas such as students creating content for learning in all modes. And what about GenAI “created” content? What role does that play? And how can we plan for that? We will share access to this GPT during the webinar so those participants with an OpenAI account for ChatGPT (free or paid) can experiment with the GPT as we discuss and then continue afterward. Please join us on June 18! Register to receive the webinar link via email: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/hyflex-learning-community-gathering-june-2025-registration-1392902842899
After June 18, you can review this webinar with all the other Gatherings on the Gathering Archives page.
2. Designing on the Edge: Teaching Smarter with AI New in Summer 2025! Join us for a one-week, flexible, hands-on workshop for faculty and instructional designers focused on the use of AI in course design, development, and teaching in any course mode – not just HyFlex.
Designing on the Edge: Teaching Smarter with AI Whether you’re teaching a course or supporting someone who is, AI tools are rapidly changing how we design, deliver, and improve learning experiences. This hands-on, one-week workshop is designed for both faculty and instructional designers who want to explore how generative AI and other AI-powered tools can enhance content creation, student engagement, and all forms of assessment. You can find this workshop in the HyFlex Learning Store at https://hyflexlearning.info. Questions? Please see the HyFlex Workshops page or Contact us for more information. And yes, we can arrange for custom dates and times for groups of five or more.
3. HyFlex Collaborative Conference June 26, 2025
The HyFlex Collaborative is hosting the 2025 annual HyFlex Collaborative Conference on Thursday, June 26, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM Eastern Standard Time. The title of the summer conference is Elevating HyFlex: Innovations and Best Practices for Future-Ready Learning Environments. The 2025 HyFlex Collaborative Conference will explore innovative approaches to multimodal teaching and learning, focusing on the evolution of HyFlex education. HyFlex in the News:
1. Western Michigan Community College Receives Grant for HyFlex in Mathematics

WSCC’s mathematics department was awarded $25,000 to support an innovative effort to improve student learning and engagement in math education. The grant will support a local project titled "Increasing Engagement in the HyFlex Modality," focused on transforming the delivery of college Algebra. The HyFlex format allows students to attend class in person, online or switch between the two as needed. With this grant, the WSCC team aims to make the HyFlex experience more interactive, personalized, and effective for students.“This project is about reimagining how we teach Algebra so that it works better for students — no matter how they attend class,” said Professor of Mathematics Dr. Adam Moreno. “We’re moving away from lecture-heavy formats and toward an inquiry-based model that emphasizes discovery and hands-on learning.”
2. University of the Philippines Announces New Engineering Programs using the HyFlex design
The University of the Philippines Mindanao (UPMin) today announced the launch of three new graduate engineering programs under a landmark collaboration with the UP Diliman College of Engineering. Starting Academic Year 2025–2026, the following programs will be offered at UPMin:
- Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCE)
- Master of Science in Industrial Engineering (MSIE)
- Master of Engineering in Industrial Engineering (MEng IE)
Delivered through HyFlex learning—a combination of real-time video conferencing and periodic in-person sessions—these programs are designed to offer flexibility for working professionals and accessibility to students across Mindanao.
“This is an opportunity for students in the Mindanao region to pursue their graduate studies without having to move to Manila or to other parts of the country,” said UP President Angelo A. Jimenez. “This initiative is aligned with UP’s mission of making quality UP education more accessible to lifelong Filipino learners, whatever their circumstances,” he added.
The initiative is part of UP’s broader effort to democratize access to advanced, high-quality education and to address long-standing regional disparities in access to engineering programs. According to CHED, only 12% of engineering students in the Philippines are in Mindanao, despite the island’s significant share of the national population and its strategic economic importance.
